As she was serving something from the saucepan, I reached into my bag for some antibacterial wipes and began to clean the forks. She noticed.
Just recently, I popped round to my aunts house to drop off some papers. Normally, we only see each other at Christmas, but this was one of those unexpected situations. My aunt doesnt live well, but its nothing to do with money. Im not stingyI just firmly believe that tidiness and cleanliness are essential. One can live simply, but a home should be kept in proper order.
Her walls are covered in all sorts of dust-collecting knick-knacks. Every available surface is stacked with figurines, crockery sets, and rows of empty jam jars. Theres a litter tray in the bathroom for her catshe cleans it once a week if that. Rubbish is scattered all over the place, underfoot wherever you go. The flat constantly smells of drains and old food.
My aunt offered me something to eat and started laying the table. As she was setting out the dishes, I caught sight of how dirty they were. While she was dishing something up from the saucepan, I discreetly pulled out my antibacterial wipes and wiped down the forks.
She spotted what I was doing. When I started picking at the food, she asked, So, are you not hungry or do you not like it?
What could I possibly say? Has anyone else been in a similar situation?
