Maria grew up in a village a few hundred kilometers from the big city. To get there in summer she had to take a boat across a stormy river, and in winter she had to wade through a snowy highway.
But in spite of that, there were a lot of people living in that village. Everyone knew each other, communicated, shared their problems, helped each other as much as they could.
Maria was the long-awaited daughter in the family, but… her mother gave birth to her out of wedlock.
The girl’s father was Jack – a tall, handsome man, her best friend’s husband. Except that no one even guessed who the baby’s real father was. The man raised three children, and never wanted to leave the family. And Maria’s mother didn’t want to break up her friend’s family.
