Not long ago, Kate, an old friend, called. On the eve of her wedding to Dan, his parents intervened with bad news. She agreed to meet with me and told me the following story:

And when we got married, we decided to buy an apartment that will be our joint property, everything is fair. My parents agreed to pay the money in equal halves. In general, we both agreed. But then I find out that Dan’s parents have already bought a house for their child. Naturally, they registered it in his name.
“And she should take the money and make repairs!” – said the mother-in-law. Kate was furious. She and Dan already had their plans and preparations, why interfere in the future family and make any additional decisions? And why should she repair something in someone else’s house? In addition, contracts and bills should be kept in folders “just in case”.
All this is very painful and terrible. After all, we could buy a house and repair it together. But it was difficult to please the future mother-in-law. She and his father had enough money to buy a gift for their son. And they were free to spend this money at their discretion.
“If you don’t agree with our decision, cancel the wedding!” – that’s all Kate heard from her future in-laws.
The girl was so upset that she was thinking of canceling the wedding. What can we say here? Of course, the actions of the mother are not unreasonable. If the possibility of sharing the apartment in the future is already being discussed. The son now has his own housing, and the cost of repairs is much easier to recoup than half the cost of the apartment itself. Dan’s mother did not object to her son’s decision.
