Alice had always imagined her wedding day as a fairy tale. Everything had to be perfect: a delicate dress, smiling guests, and a happy groom by her side. But from the very morning, something went awry.
First, the makeup artist—whom she had chosen based on glowing reviews—refused to show up. Then, the groom got stuck in traffic, and she had to go to the registry office with her parents. And as if that weren’t enough, an ill-fated black cat dashed across the road…
“Mom, maybe it’s a sign? Maybe I shouldn’t get married?” Alice nervously bit her lips.
“Daughter, don’t make things up. Cats are just doing their own thing. If you love Edward, you shouldn’t worry about the little things,” her mom replied.
But when the photographer announced he couldn’t come due to a broken camera, Alice nearly burst into tears. It felt as if the whole day had conspired against her.
However, everything changed when she saw her beloved. Edward looked at her with such love that all the misfortunes faded into the background. She calmed down, realizing that the most important thing was that they were together.
Suddenly, the voice of her mother-in-law cut through the air like an icy wind:
“Your family didn’t even contribute a single penny to the wedding! They’re not welcome here!”
Alice froze. She stared at her mother’s face as she silently squeezed her father’s hand. They said nothing; they simply turned and walked toward the exit.
She waited for Edward’s reaction. She hoped he would stand by her side, say it was all a misunderstanding. But he remained silent—standing right next to her and… saying nothing.
The guests cried out “Bitter!” but there was no joy in her heart. She looked at her groom. He was about to kiss her, as if nothing had happened. And in that moment she realized: she had been wrong. In her choice, her dreams, her trust in a man who failed to protect her.
Alice turned and ran out of the restaurant. Edward didn’t even try to stop her.
Outside, her parents’ car awaited. Her mom rushed to her, embracing her and wiping away the tears on her face.
“Daughter, think about it. Maybe it’s worth coming back?” she whispered.
“Mom, what comes next? Am I supposed to live in a family that humiliates me? Wait until I’m forced to be a ‘convenient’ wife? No, Mom. I’ve made my choice.”
From behind, Edward’s voice was heard. He stood hesitantly, struggling to find the right words.
“Alice, don’t make a tragedy out of this. It’s just money. Is it really worth destroying our future over that?”
She removed her engagement ring and offered it to him.
“Here’s your ‘future.’ Take it.”
“Alice, that’s a bad omen…” he murmured.
She bitterly laughed. How many more signs did she need to understand that this marriage was a mistake?
“I don’t want to be part of this family. Thank you for opening my eyes in time.”
She got into the car. Her father started the engine. As the car began to move, she felt peace for the first time that day.
A few days later, Alice filed for divorce. Everything proceeded quickly: no property, no children, no shared future.
And she regretted nothing.
