My names William. Im a sprightly 65, if I say so myself. I am married, but in the autumn years of my life I somehow stumbled headfirst into a completely unexpected romance with another woman. My wife, Margaret, is 62. Weve got a grown son, Edward, whos settled down and even has a couple of kids himself. Once Edward got married and moved out, it dawned on meMargaret and I had become utter strangers in our own home.
When we both retired, I pitched a grand idea: lets buy a cottage out in the countryside. Margaret wasnt keen, but I wore her down eventually. Before long, we picked up a charming little place in Dorset, and come summer, off we went. I absolutely loved country lifethe smell of freshly cut grass, the cheerful mooing of cowsbut Margaret was about as enthusiastic as a cat at bath time. She preferred lounging on the sofa, reading a Jane Austen novel, or getting lost in a marathon of detective shows. She wouldnt touch the garden with a bargepole, always whimsically claiming she was under the weather. So, naturally, I ended up doing all the work myself.
When autumn blew around, we packed up and returned to London. Margaret was positively delighted to be back, where Waitrose deliveries and her favourite bookshops were handy. But, after just a week of city life, I packed my rucksack and hopped on the train back to Dorset. I simply felt more at home among the hedgerows and sheep. So, Margaret stayed in London and now we rarely see each other, apart from the odd Sunday roast or Christmas visit.
Back in Dorset, I found myself falling for a lovely woman named Evelyn. Shes a dazzling 60. At first, she barely batted an eyelid at my attempts at charm, but now things are going splendidly. Im seriously considering divorcing Margaret, though Im utterly terrified of what Edward will think. For now, I just tell Margaret that Im maintaining the house, but truthfully I spend plenty of time with Evelyn.
Margaret hasnt the faintest clue. I havent mustered the nerve to tell her I want a divorce. Honestly, I havent the foggiest what to do. If someones got any sage advice, Id be more than grateful!
