Adam was deeply hurt when he discovered his mother planned to give the flat to his sister instead of him and his wife—especially after they had been the ones to care for her when she needed help, leaving Adam wondering why his mother would favor his sister over them.

It’s remarkable how life can turn on a sixpence. Mum raised my sister and me on her own, never asking for help, always putting us first. It was just after Easter when she had that heart scare. Without thinking, I stepped up and brought her home she needed looking after. My wife, Sophie, and I made her comfortable in our place in Manchester, juggling her care alongside our young daughter and the stress at work.

My sister, Emily, lives in Oxford, with a flat far larger than ours, yet she always had a reason not to take Mum in. If asked, there was always some excuse too much on, too little space, too many commitments. When I needed a bit of help with the money for Mums medications or doctor’s appointments, Emily would tell me she just couldnt spare the pounds, saying her own expenses came first.

Despite all that, Sophie and I did everything we could for Mum. Slowly, she got stronger, even pitching in with chores around the house when she felt up to it. Things seemed to be improving, until one evening, I overheard Mum talking to Emily on the phone. She was making plans to sign over her Manchester flat to Emily, so she could sell it and buy herself a bigger place.

That hit me hard, if Im honest. After all wed done, after showing up when she needed me most, it seemed Emily who hadnt lifted a finger was going to walk away with everything. I confronted Mum about it, hoping thered been a mistake. But she just told me straight: Emily “needed the money more”, and Id “always land on my feet”.

I was gutted. Id put my heart into caring for her, but all my efforts seemed invisible. Angry and hurt, I realised I couldnt keep living like this giving everything without so much as a thought in return. I packed Mums bags and arranged for Emily to collect her. Mum doted on Emily, so perhaps it was fair she should be the one to look after her.

Reflecting on it now, Ive learnt sometimes life isnt fair especially when family is involved. No matter how much love or sacrifice we offer, people can choose what suits them best. I gave everything, but I also needed to look after myself. Thats a lesson I wont forget.
