I was busy tidying up the house one afternoon when my friend Charlotte rang me out of the blue. She barely gave me a moment to speak, insisting that I come round straight away, as Matthew had finally left her. Hed gone off with some woman he met here in London, quite a shock to us all, really. Without much thought, we both ended up at her kitchen table, deciding to raise a glass in quiet celebration of this rather pivotal turning point in her life.
Shed been living with Matthew for some time, enduring a tough relationship with him. The man was jealous to a fault and horribly possessive. Matthew demanded all of Charlottes attention and would lose his temper even flinging plates if he wasnt pleased with her cooking. His bad moods would linger for days, sometimes weeks on end, and the silent treatment became a constant companion in their home.
Now free from it all, Charlotte could finally breathe, and she told me how relieved she felt. Matthew had never let her mix with her friends for fear we might put ideas in her head. But now, she was eager to be surrounded by people who cared for her. As we sat together, we exchanged stories about our own relationshipshow jealousy and pressure from our husbands or boyfriends had taken their toll on us.
No one really knew how Matthew had come across his new flame, but he spent more and more time popping round for a quick jog, though we all knew what he was really up to. Charlotte was left wondering if Matthew would bother supporting their children, and even considered reporting him to the police for neglect. We talked well into the evening, shared a bottle of wine, and confided in each other about heartbreaks and broken marriages.
A month later, when Matthew unexpectedly turned up at Charlottes door, she greeted him with a cool indifference. He seemed to expect an emotional reunion, but instead, her frosty stare left him at a loss for words. He asked her what women really want, and she met his gaze, answering firmly, Love and respect. In that moment, Charlotte realised her own strength and decided she was better off without him. Matthew could only stand there, stunned.
If theres anything I took away from that day, its that sometimes the end of something painful can be the beginning of finding your true self. All anyone really wants is to be valued and treated with kindness and that should never be too much to ask.
