The Note That Changed Everything: A School Story of Love and Envy
Oliver was rummaging through his backpack as usual when he spotted a strange folded slip of paper between his notebooks. Carefully unfolding it, he felt a sudden skip in his chest:
*”Hello! I really like you. If you want to meet, I’ll be waiting behind the school at four today.”*
He was surprised, even flustered. He had no idea who could have left it there.
Yet curiosity won out. At precisely four o’clock, he stood at the meeting spot. Then—he saw Emily. The shy, quiet new girl.
“Was this from you?” he asked cautiously.
“What?” Emily looked baffled. “Me? No, of course not!”
“Then why are you here? Are you… waiting for me?”
“Well… Charlotte told me you liked me…” Emily murmured, blushing fiercely.
Oliver frowned. Things were getting stranger by the second.
**The Move That Changed Everything**
Emily had moved to a new neighbourhood with her parents when they bought a bigger flat. Though their home was nicer, her old school was now miles away. Her parents insisted—since there was a school right outside their door, she’d attend there.
Emily resisted as much as she could. Starting Year 10 in a new place, where friend groups had long been formed, was terrifying. But no one listened.
“You’ll make friends!” her mum said. “You’re such a sociable girl!”
Except her mum was wrong. Emily had always struggled to connect with people. At her new school, she couldn’t fit in.
At first, the others showed interest, but Emily replied hesitantly, avoiding eye contact. Soon, they left her alone.
She didn’t mind—she was just different. Quiet, cautious, she secretly watched one boy: Oliver. Cheerful, outgoing, the class favourite.
She liked him. A lot. But the thought of speaking to him made her stomach twist.
**Envy in the School Halls**
Charlotte noticed—bold, confident Charlotte, who had fancied Oliver for ages, though they were just friends.
Seeing Emily’s timid glances, irritation prickled Charlotte’s skin. She decided to put the new girl in her place.
“Let’s play a trick on her,” she suggested to her friends. “Slip Oliver a note from a ‘secret admirer,’ then tell Emily he likes her back. Watch her squirm!”
Her friends hesitated but eventually agreed. Charlotte approached Emily with fake sweetness.
“I heard Oliver likes you. Want me to check if it’s true?”
Emily’s eyes lit up—which only fueled Charlotte’s spite.
“He’s going to ask you to meet him,” Charlotte said. “Behind school, at four. Don’t tell anyone, okay?”
“Okay,” Emily whispered, thrilled and nervous.
**The Ending No One Saw Coming**
The next day, Charlotte slipped the note into Oliver’s bag. He read it—puzzled, intrigued.
He showed up. And there stood Emily.
“Did you write this?”
“No… I was told you…”
Oliver understood immediately. He sighed. He knew Charlotte’s games well.
But Emily had come. So maybe…?
“If you’re here, does that mean you like me?” he grinned.
Emily flushed crimson. She wanted to bolt. But Oliver stopped her.
“Since we’re here… Fancy a walk?”
Charlotte, watching from around the corner while recording, froze. This wasn’t the plan. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.
Worse yet, the next day, Oliver and Emily walked into class together. Laughing. Smiling. Sitting side by side.
**The Aftermath**
“Did you do this to spite me?” Charlotte confronted Oliver at break.
“No. You introduced us, actually. Cheers for that—we get on brilliantly.”
Charlotte refused to believe it. She waited for it to unravel. For it to be a joke.
But months passed. They stayed together. School ended. They were still a couple. Then came the wedding.
Only then did Charlotte truly realise—her prank had backfired spectacularly.
**The Lesson?**
Before seeking revenge or mocking others—think twice. Sometimes, life has its own way of setting things right.
