After her father walked out on the family, Charlotte developed a deep resentment towards him. Despite his promises to keep in regular contact, she wanted nothing to do with him. However, her grandmother persistently encouraged her to ring him, stressing that he was still her father and she ought to stay in touch. This seemed odd to Charlotte, especially since her own mother never spoke to her ex-husband. Even so, to avoid upsetting her mum, Charlotte would meet up with her father on occasion.
Once, she was taken out of school during lessons to see him. Her teacher was clearly unhappy about it, but couldnt intervene when Charlottes own father showed up to collect her. At his house, Charlotte overheard her classmates gossiping about an alleged half-sister she supposedly had. At first, she refused to believe it, but the truth became obvious when she saw her fathers new familyhis wife and their young daughter. Charlottes stepmother treated her kindly, fussing over her and asking about her homework. Meanwhile, her father kept his distance, buried in his laptop and barely acknowledging either of his daughters.
Over time, her father started picking Charlotte up from home more often, asking her to look after her younger half-sister. Charlotte disliked having this responsibility thrust upon her and refused to think of the girl as her sister. Nevertheless, she felt pressured to play along for the sake of appearances, just as her mum and grandmother expected. When asked to stay longer at her dads house, Charlotte refused, excusing herself with her homework. Her father didnt bat an eye and instead suggested she could help by watching her half-sister while he and his new wife went out.
Feeling insulted and neglected, Charlotte reached her breaking point and decided never to go back to her fathers home. When he rang to ask where she was and remind her of her duty to her half-sister, Charlotte stood her ground, refusing to be treated as a free babysitter. She pointed out how rarely he actually spoke to her, leaving her to care for his child while he busied himself with his own affairs. The lack of appreciation and attention pushed her further away, and their relationship all but collapsed.
The attempts by her father and his wife to patch things up led nowhere. Finally, Charlotte confronted her father, demanding an explanation for his behaviour. His reply was blunt: he admitted someone had to help with the youngest child and didnt even try to pretend he missed Charlotte herself.
In the end, the strained relationship between Charlotte and her father remains unresolved, with no sign of reconciliation on the horizon. His actions have caused irreparable damage to their bond, leaving Charlotte feeling unappreciated and taken for granted.
