Everything seemed fine. The scans showed the baby was perfectly healthy. But the birth turned out to be complicated. It was a girl, but there were serious issuesserious enough that the doctors tried to convince me to walk away.
My daughter lay in an incubator. When my husband came to visit, the doctor told him the baby might not survive, and if she did, she would only be a burden. He thought about it for a long while and eventually decided it would be best to leave her and not ruin his own life. I said nothingI was in the depths of despair.
But just before I was meant to be discharged, I announced that I would not abandon my daughter. My husband packed his belongings and left. I returned to our empty flat with my child. I was completely alone. But I resolved to fight for my daughter. I went from hospital to hospital, spoke with doctors, and took every chance that came my way. In the end, it paid off.
I found support among many mothers who had poorly children themselves. One day at the hospital, I met a man. He shared his story with me: his wife had left him for a younger lover, and theyd never had children, so he spent his days in solitude.
He looked at my sick little girl with such tenderness that it brought tears to my eyes. He helped me, offering advice, his experience, even his money. Soon we became so close that we couldnt bear the thought of parting. Eventually, we got married.
Today my daughter is nearly healthy. And our family has grown: we now have a young son as wella little boy.
