I married David eighteen years ago. His circumstances were truly unfortunate, all thanks to his ex-wife who abandoned both him and their children, running off with her new partner. David and Anna had once shared a happy marriage, blessed with two wonderful childrena son named Benjamin and a daughter called Grace.
When Benjamin was four and Grace was three, David lost his job at a time when it was extremely difficult for the family. Anna tried her best, searching for work and scraping together whatever she could to put food on the table. Meanwhile, David struggled to cope. He spent his days at the local pub with his mates, drowning his sorrows and railing against the government.
Anna grew weary of their situation. During this period, a wealthier man began to show her attention, and, giving in to temptation, she left her family behind and moved away with her lover. The children were left to fend for themselves, and kind-hearted neighbours stepped in to make sure Benjamin and Grace were fed and watched over. Meanwhile, David continued spending his time at the pub, so distracted that he didn’t notice Anna had left. By the time he realised what had happened, social services had already taken the children into care.
I met David at a mutual friends wedding in Manchester. I was immediately drawn to him. We started talking, and I made it my mission to help him see things differently and regain control over his life.
After our wedding, I suggested we adopt Benjamin and Grace from the care home. I can’t have children of my own, but my heart ached for those two. From the first moments, I treated them as though they were truly mine, and before long, they loved me just as I loved them.
Eighteen years have gone by. Neither child has ever suspected I wasnt their real mum. Suddenly, Anna reappeared in our lives. She reached out to Benjamin and Grace, telling them she was their biological mother. Benjamin took it in his stride and assured her that he only had one motherme. Grace was warmer and chose to forgive Anna.
At first, I was upset about their reconnection. Anna had once caused unimaginable pain, but I now see that guilt has been weighing on her heart and she wants to make amends. Im determined to help her, because a mother is both the one who gives birth and the one who raises a child. My children are lucky; they now have two mothers who care for them deeply.
