Its been four years now since I took my parental leave. Turns out, having kids relatively close in age means my days are filled with the constant rhythm of being a mum. David, my husband, juggles two jobs, but we own our own flat here in Manchester, so were managing well enough.
What have you accomplished by the age of twenty-five? You should have had a career by now, just like my daughter, my mother-in-law remarked, her voice brimming with a sort of misplaced pride.
My sister-in-law, Charlotte, had no intention of settling down anytime soon. She was focused on her youth and beauty above all, adamant about not sacrificing her independence to raise children. Thats her choiceI made mine five years ago. Despite all her big talk, Charlottes career hadnt exactly taken off. She always seemed to have a chip on her shoulder, gossiping about others as if it were a competitive sport.
Charlotte lived for excitementshe travelled, went on wild city breaks, always chasing the next adventure. Then, about a month ago, she showed up at my door, breathless. Her manager was due to go on maternity leave, and the office needed someone to cover. Whoever put together the best project proposal would get the position. The snag? Charlotte had never been all that tech-savvy. There was no way she could handle creating a decent project without help.
Thats when my mother-in-law started lobbying me as well. I couldnt fathom how I was meant to take on a work project while also caring for two little ones. Still, she insistedshe even promised to take care of all the daily chores so I could help her precious daughter. Reluctantly, I agreed.
The very next day, she rang me up, saying, I cant take the children with me. I need to go to the countryside and sort out the preserves, so you lot will have to manage without me.
Charlotte, of course, didnt come round once. That left me trying to juggle the work myself, working through the night, exhausted and frazzled. I had wanted to help her, but there simply wasnt enough timeno one in our family had ever stepped in to watch the children for even a single evening.
Eventually, Charlotte burst out, Why isnt it done yet? You promised!
And you and your mum promised to look after my children, didnt you? I havent even had a chance to think about a proper job, I replied.
She stormed off in a huff, declaring shed handle it on her own. Predictably, nothing came of ither laziness got the better of her and the promotion slipped past her.
Youre just awful! You set my daughter up! Youre jealous of her! my mother-in-law cried.
I felt no need to defend myself. What mattered most was that David understood and told me to cut ties with his sister altogether. Now, Charlotte can fend for herselffree and independent, just as she wanted.
