I absolutely adore my son, and ever since he was born, Ive done my utmost to give him nothing but the best.
Together with my wife, weve gone above and beyond to make our boy happy. Hes always been kitted out in the snazziest jumpers, sent off to every paid hobby club under the sun tennis, origami, underwater jazzercise, you name it. And despite having more than your average prince, hes always treated his mum and me with kindness and respect.
I work all hours, rain or shine, to support him. Not that I mind, honestly I always manage to find time for him, whenever he needs a chat or help fixing his ancient laptop.
My sons always been a smashing lad, so I knew it was just a matter of time before he started showing a keen interest in girls. My wife and I braced ourselves for that day, as any sensible parents would. It did come a bit sooner than wed imagined, but we welcomed his girlfriend with open arms. The only thing we asked was that he bring her round for dinner nothing fancy, just some shepherds pie and awkward small talk. My son was perfectly fine with that, even suggested inviting her next time he popped home.
My wife was thoroughly on board we were both quietly confident hed picked a good egg, but as responsible parents, we wanted to see for ourselves. After all, hes still a young lad, and teenage infatuation is a very British rite of passage.
When he finally introduced us to his new girlfriend, I was rather surprised. She seemed perfectly pleasant at first: polite, well-spoken, maybe a bit too keen on our dog, Daisy. But as the evening wore on, I started to see another side she was a bit of a fibber and, frankly, a master of manipulation. Didnt seem to care about anyone but herself.
Now, heres the clanger I work for the police in Manchester, and I recognised this girl from a few financial fraud cases. Shed been suspected of stringing along blokes online, telling them she was a poor orphan, and then pocketing their money before vanishing into the digital mist. Her track record was alarmingly long, mostly with hearts and wallets left bruised behind her.
I sat my son down and told him everything I knew. But would he listen? Not a chance. He shouted at me, accused me of making the whole thing up just to ruin his happiness, and stormed off to move in with his girlfriend.
We havent heard a peep from him in a month. Now Im left mulling it over and wondering if I did the right thing perhaps shes turned over a new leaf, or maybe someone tried to set her up?
