Me and my husband are just your average English couple, really. This is our first marriage and weve been together for 25 years now. Weve always tried to set a good example for our daughter never argued in front of her, always treated each other with respect and kindness. Honestly, weve got a happy marriage. I always hoped that by showing her what a solid relationship looks like, our daughter would one day build a good life for herself, too. People always say that children follow in their parents footsteps, dont they?
But this is where things start to become a bit tricky. Our daughters not married yet, but she does have a boyfriend. Two years ago, my mother passed away, and she left her flat to us. My husband and I thought it would be best to pass it on to our daughter. And now, it turns out shes living there with her boyfriend.
We really dont mind that shes got her own life. The problem is, this boyfriend of hers is absolutely hopeless. He doesnt lift a finger around the house not a thing. Any time theres a leaking tap or a lightbulb that needs changing, our daughter rings her dad straight away. Weve asked her more than once why her boyfriend never does anything, but she just stays quiet and promises that hell pull his weight soon.
And to make matters worse, we only found out recently that he hasnt got a job. Not even looking, by the sounds of it. Meaning hes not bringing in a single penny, and our daughter is working two jobs just to make ends meet for both of them. I honestly dont think he cares about her all that much.
Ive told her I really think shes making a mistake, but it doesnt seem to bother her at all. Shes convinced hell change, that everything will work out because she loves him. And I love my daughter so much it just breaks my heart.
