I am a very active man, even at the age of 65. I still manage to visit different places and meet fascinating people. I look back on my youth with both happiness and a touch of nostalgia. Back then, you could go on holiday just about anywhere you fancied. You could take a trip to the seaside, go camping with friends or colleagues, set off on a river cruise, and do all of it without spending much money.
But those days have faded into memories.
Ive always enjoyed meeting new people. I met folks at the beach, at the theatre, and Ive kept in touch with many acquaintances for years.
There was a time we received a telegram. I couldnt imagine who would send us such a thing. Of course, my wife and I hadnt gone anywhere. But at four oclock in the morning, someone knocked on our door. I opened it and was stunned. Standing there was Sarah, two teenage girls, a grandmother, and a man, all surrounded by a mountain of bags and suitcases. My wife and I stood in shock, but then we ushered these unexpected guests into our flat.
Sarah asked, Why didnt you go away for us? We sent you a telegram! And besides, taxis cost real money these days!
Im sorry, I replied, but we had no idea who sent that telegram.
Well, you had my address. Here I am, Sarah said. I thought wed just write letters to each other, honestly!
Then Sarah explained one of the girls had just finished school and decided to attend university, so the whole family came along for support.
Well live with you! We dont have enough pounds for rent, and youre right near the centre!
I was dumbfounded. After all, we werent even family. Why should we let them stay? We also had to feed them three times a day. They brought some food, but never cooked anything themselves. I ended up serving everyone.
After three days, I couldnt take it anymore. I asked Sarah and her family to move out, wherever they wished. This sparked a massive rowSarah began smashing dishes and yelling hysterically.
I was absolutely stunned by her behaviour. Eventually, they left. In the end, they managed to steal my dressing gown, several towels, and somehowalmost magicallytook off with a big pot of cabbage. How they managed that, Ill never know. But the pot disappeared right before my eyes.
Looking back, Ive learned that generosity has its limits and its important to set clear boundaries, even if it feels uncomfortable.
