I live with my mother and juggle two jobs. I pay for my own groceries and bills because my mums whole pension goes towards supporting my older brother. I work tirelessly to save up for a flat of my own, and its a real challenge balancing all the payments while trying to put aside enough for the home Ive always wanted. Despite everything, I stay committed to my goal with hard work and discipline.
Recently, my brother asked me if he could borrow some money for a deposit abroad. Deep down, I knew he wouldnt pay me back, so I calmly said no. I explained that I need every penny for buying my own flat. He didnt take my refusal well and immediately complained to our mother.
My brothers finances are shaky at best. Hes a taxi driver and takes on odd repair jobs, so his income is all over the place. On top of that, he and his wife tend to splurge on unnecessary things like pricey takeaway food and fancy gadgets. Their lifestyle means theyre always struggling to make ends meet, even though they have three kids and no stable place to call home.
Meanwhile, I focus on saving and being careful with what I spend. Im perfectly happy with my old mobile, while my brothers wife is forever chasing the latest models on credit. When I refused to lend him money for his deposit abroad, he took offence and went straight to mum to tell her all about it.
Mum tried to persuade me to help him, even though he still owed me money. She offered something generous: if I gave him the cash, shed transfer her flat to my name. Still, I turned it downI didnt want to wait for an inheritance.
Although my mother accepted my decision, things got tricky when my brother and his family decided to move in with her to save money. They didnt give any thought to my situation, leaving me without a place to stay. Mum assumed Id be fine since I had some savings, and my brother cut off all contact with me.
Even with all the difficulties and tension in my family, I dont feel guilty about my choice. I believe I did the right thing, staying true to what I valueputting my future and my dreams first, and managing my hard-earned savings responsibly.
