My son is nine, a truly cheerful and easy-going lad. Recently, my sister threw a wedding bash, and the invites made it crystal clear: No children allowed. Not really my cup of tea, that rule, but I decided to be brave about it. I arranged for a friend to look after my son on the big day.
But as luck would have it Murphys Law being what it is my friend rang up late the night before, groaning that shed come down with something nasty. She apologised profusely, but honestly, it wasnt her fault. I reassured her, then sat in the kitchen pondering my options. My son was fast asleep and the wedding was in mere hours. What now? In the end, I thought, surely my sister wouldnt toss her own nephew out in the cold, right? So, I took him along to the reception.
My brother-in-law is loaded, so I expected the sort of wedding you only see in glossy magazines. My sister was already pretty anxious, so I didnt mention my change of plan beforehand. When she saw my son there, her face transformed from delighted bride to raging banshee. She promptly lost her cool and launched into a proper meltdown:
Why did you bring your son? We said no kids! Youve ruined everything for me!
I felt mortified, while my son just stood there, blinking in confusion, completely baffled by the drama. Honestly, whats the fuss about? But, of course, this was just the opening act.
Let her deal with her own child, my brother-in-law shrugged. Her business where she takes him.
I was taken aback. My sister wanted nothing to do with explanations. I tried, but she was impenetrable.
So, feeling frustrated, I scooped up my son and headed home. Mum and Dad stayed at the wedding, but you could tell their hearts werent in it. The atmosphere was anything but festive.
Afterwards, my sister sulked and expected me to grovel for forgiveness. Personally, I dont think Im at fault. This kind of behaviour doesnt exactly earn her points in the sister department especially as she’s about to become a mother herself. Should I be apologising to her? What would you do if you were in my shoes?
