Imagine for a moment that, by some twist of fate, you’ve managed to buy your very own flat in a seaside town. Picture it small and cosy. Youve moved in, finally living right by the sea. Before this, not a soul from your family showed the slightest interest in your wellbeing. No one ever asked how you were, whether you were thriving or ailing, or why you’ve worked relentlessly for five years without taking a holiday.
Typically, the English are known for their hospitalitythey wont hesitate to let someone stay the night. Yet the stress begins when guests become demanding and attempt to live off your generosity. Where exactly is that fine linewhen being hospitable morphs into the secret urge to chuck everyone out, just to reclaim your peace in your own home?
Family and friends dont always show up at your door when you suddenly come into money or buy a house in a lovely spot. But if you own a home by the sea, the parade of visitors seems endless.
Once, Emma came to stay with us. She suffered from breathlessness, a heavy chest, as though she was burning up inside. She had seen the doctors, of course, but no one could find anything wrong. Turns out, she was under constant stress and hadnt even realised. The root of her troubles was hiding just beneath the surface…
It all began when Emma bought her flat. She was naïve enough to hand her mother a spare set of keys. At the time, it felt like the right thing to do. Her mum lived four hours away from Emma, but she often came down by train to visit. Emma would have to leave work every time just to meet her mum.
To make things easier, she gave her mother the keys, believing that solved the problem. At first, it was fine. But soon, her mum started arriving not alone, but accompanied by relatives, friends, and even neighbours.
“Emma dear, what a life you have! Let us stay with you a while,” theyd say. “Good deeds should always be returned in kind.”
Emmas husband was usually away for work, often travelling, so he didnt witness the flood of guests. Emma genuinely believed she was doing the right thing, doing good for others. The town wasnt particularly large, but her flat became a revolving door for many, and her mum seemed delighted to help everyone out. Only she did it through her daughternever spending her own money, always using Emmas resources. She was doing good at Emmas expense.
Emma endured her mothers antics, squeezing into one room with her husband while the other was taken over by the never-ending flow of family and guests. She cooked for everyone, made sure they felt at home. She even took on a second job, as money had become desperately short. Then came the lockdown; her husband lost his job and remained at home. As for the guests, they were unfazed by any threat of illness. They continued to visit, sometimes staying for days without asking.
Her husband had finally had enough. He told Emma:
“You either take back your mums keys and forbid her from inviting people over, or Im leaving you.”
Emma struggled with the decision; shed been raised to be a dutiful daughter, but she didnt want to lose her husband. In the end, she decided to speak to her mum.
Her mother immediately accused her of heartlessness, even pretended to be ill, claiming Emma had brought on a heart attack. She employed every tactic she could, playing the victim, manipulating Emmabut Emma stood firm.
Her mother refused to return the keys, declaring she didnt have a daughter anymore and didnt want to see her again. In the end, Emmas husband changed the locks. You can never predict what uninvited guests might do. A handful showed up again to greet us, but no one opened the door. Feeding a stream of relatives is, frankly, thankless work.
Emma felt regret for the broken relationship with her mum. But she also felt relieffinally, she had enough money, and those agonising chest pains that plagued her every time she tried to be the good daughter vanished. She had spent so long pleasing her mother at her own expense.
