Patrick was a humble young man, free from bad habits. When he turned twenty-five, his parents gave him the gift of a flat. How did they do it? They helped him gather enough money for the deposit on a mortgage. So, Patrick finally began living on his own. He worked as a software developer, preferred a quiet lifestyle, and had very little interaction with anyone.
To avoid loneliness, Patrick decided to adopt a kitten. The little cat had a defect in its front paws. The family who owned its mother wanted the kitten put down, but Patrick felt sorry for it and took it home. He named the kitten Oliver. Life together was pleasantPatrick hurried home from work every evening to see Oliver, and the kitten waited faithfully for him on the mat in the hallway.
After some time, Patrick started dating a girl from work. The girl, Gemma, was determined; she won his heart quickly and, in less than a month, moved in with him.
Gemma disliked Oliver from the start and asked Patrick to give him away. Patrick refused, explaining how important Oliver was to him. Gemma didnt let it go and pressured Patrick again to get rid of the cat. He insisted Oliver would stay. Gemma argued that Oliver was ruining their reputation, as guests were disgusted by his unusual paws. Caught between his girlfriend and Oliver, Patrick was torn; he cared deeply for both.
His parents also disapproved of Gemma. They thought she was rude and overbearing. They urged Patrick not to rush into marriage, so he could better understand her character.
When Gemmas parents came to visit, Patrick finally realised he did not want to tie his future to her. As Gemmas father crossed the threshold and spotted Oliver, he laughed and called him odd. Patrick immediately defended his cats honour.
Throughout the evening, Gemma and her father mocked Olivers appearance, suggesting Patrick get rid of him and dreaming up different places he might be sent. Gemmas mother chimed in, laughing at Oliver as well. The next day, when Patrick returned from work, Oliver was missing. He asked Gemma about the kitten, and she told him she had taken him to the vet and left him there.
Patrick rushed out to search for Oliver and spent five hours looking. He finally found Oliver, who purred contentedly in Patricks arms, happy that his owner had come for him. When Patrick returned home, he told Gemma to pack her bags and leave. Her cruelty had honestly repulsed him, and he no longer wanted her around.
The following morning, Gemma quietly packed her things and left, resigned. She never imagined that Patrick would value a cat more than her. Now, Patrick and Oliver live together in peace, and Oliver eagerly greets his owner after work every day.
In the end, Patrick learned that kindness and loyalty count for far more than appearances or reputationand that true love means accepting those we care about, flaws and all.
