So, let me tell you whats been going on with my brother. Last month, when he turned eighteen, he completely surprised all of us by announcing that he wanted to marry his girlfriend, Emily. Now, you can imagine the look on my parents faces they were absolutely not thrilled. Theyd never really warmed up to Emily because of her bad manners and the fact that she just didnt seem to care much about her studies. Shes at college, but apparently, she barely shows up to lectures, which really gets under my parents skin. Theyve always thought shes a bad influence, pulling my brother away from his own schoolwork.
To top it off, Emily can be a bit rude, and shes got this habit of dressing in a way my parents think is just plain sloppy and not how a young woman should dress, in their eyes. Even Emilys own family dont approve of their relationship theyd rather she kept her distance. And despite her living with us on and off for two years, she hasnt done much to win anyone over in our household.
My brother, on the other hand, got properly wound up by all the criticism and refused to budge, insisting he wouldnt give up on Emily just to keep our parents happy. Personally, I didnt really have strong feelings either way about her, but I was worried that things might get even more strained at home because of her being around. See, my brother had been living with us, while Emily stayed with her mum, stepdad, and little sister. But since they couldnt afford a place of their own, my brother suggested Emily could just move in and they could share his room.
Thats when things really boiled over. Our dad made some pretty harsh comments, asking how they thought theyd manage living in an empty room with barely any furniture and saying that my brother would have to foot all the bills himself if they went ahead with this plan. My brother didnt take that well he fired back, demanded his share of the house, packed his things into a small backpack, and stormed out. For the next few weeks, he and Emily were sofa-surfing, moving between friends places, until suddenly they came back, completely set on sticking together no matter what.
Then he really dropped a bombshell on my parents by saying he wanted to sell his share of the house, hinting that if they didnt accept his decision, hed leave the family behind for good. That led to a huge argument, and sure enough, he left again after that row. I have a feeling Emilys mum might have been encouraging this bold move, since shes got some sort of legal background and probably gave them advice on how to handle things.
I tried to step in you know me, always stuck in the middle, wanting to keep the peace but both my parents and my brother just told me to butt out and leave them to it.
Honestly, its been tough on all of us, and I just hope that, given a bit of time, everyone can cool off, have a proper chat, and sort things out so were not all walking on eggshells at home anymore.
