My granddaughter said something during Sunday dinner that left everyone at the table speechless.
We were all gathered togethermy daughter, son-in-law, their two children, and myself. It was just an ordinary Sunday meal, nothing out of the ordinary. Our conversation drifted from school, to work, to what everyones planning for the summer holidays.
Then, out of nowhere, my daughter brought up something that made me feel a bit uneasy. She said shes thinking we should start meeting a bit less often. She didnt say it harshly, just plainly enough. She explained the children are growing up now and need to learn to be more independent. She added that when Im around too often, the kids tend to depend on me for everything.
I sat and listened. I didnt argue. Just nodded.
Thats when my younger granddaughter, eight years old, lifted her head from her plate and asked something no one expected. She asked why mummy doesnt want grandma to come round anymore.
Suddenly, the room went quiet. My daughter tried to smile and said thats not exactly what she meant. But the child pressed on. She said that when Im there, everyone is calmer. Mum doesnt get cross as much. Dad laughs more. And the house feels warmer and nicer.
No one said a word. My daughter just looked down at the table.
And in that moment, it hit me. Grown-ups can come up with endless explanations. But children are able to see the truth much more clearly.
After dinner, my daughter came over to me and admitted she might have been unfair. She said its easy to forget how much someones presence means.
I wasnt upset. I just shared something Ive learned over the years: that love doesnt get in the way of a homeit makes it a home.
But I still wonder about one thing. What would you do, if you were in my place?
