My husband and I have worked tirelessly from the very start of our life together. We always wanted our children to have everything they needed, never wanting for anything. Thats why, after our daughter was born, my husband took on two jobs to provide for us. We tried our best to raise our daughter to be polite and thoughtful. Time has flown by. Before we knew it, we realised our daughter had grown up.
She has turned into a beautiful young woman. Suitors were never in short supply. Later on, we began to notice she was acting with particular care. After a while, we found out why. She had fallen for a boy. My husband and I were thrilled when we heard the news, and we even asked our daughter to introduce us to this man who had won her heart. We wondered who was fortunate enough to have gained her affection. She assured us shed arrange a meeting soon.
Recently, she told us she planned to bring him home to meet us. I spent the whole day in the kitchen, preparing all sorts of dishes. My husband made sure the house was spotless. We both put in so much effort and eagerly awaited the meeting. We took good care of our daughter. She looked absolutely delighted, always smiling, barely walkingshe was practically gliding about. My husband and I looked at her and felt an overwhelming joy that everything was going so well for her.
When her boyfriend arrived, he made a great first impression. Polite, funny, friendly. I welcomed them both to the dining table. But I couldnt shake a peculiar feeling throughout the evening: a nagging thought that Id seen him somewhere before. His face seemed so familiar to me. All night long, I racked my brain. We chatted and laughed a lot. My daughters boyfriend showed his best side, making us feel at ease.
The moment he left, it all came back to me. Id seen his photo in the newspaper. He and another man were conmen. The article urged anyone who had information to contact the authorities straight away. I told my husband and daughter at once. My daughter burst into tears, insisting I had made the story up on purpose.
But it wasnt true. I just wanted to warn my daughter of possible trouble. We care very much about who she chooses to build her life with. Despite this, my daughter packed her things and left home.
We havent heard from her at all for a month. She doesnt answer our calls. Im overwhelmed with guilt now. Perhaps I was mistaken and my daughters boyfriend is, after all, a decent man.
