Its a peculiar situationmy sister and I share the same mother-in-law.
Everyone adored my husband, and he was charming, no doubt about that. He pursued me quite keenly, but it was obvious that he also had an eye on my sister. As soon as Edward learned that my grandmother had left me her flat instead of Evelyn, he proposed without a moments hesitation.
Evelyn, meanwhile, was already pregnantshed been planning to marry Edward, hoping a child would seal the deal. When things didnt go as planned, she lied to her former boyfriend about the babys paternity, desperate to have a man in her life.
Edward and I lived in a cramped little house owned by his parents in Chelmsford. When their neighbours put a plot of land up for sale, Edward persuaded me to sell the flat Id inherited so we could buy it. I reluctantly agreed, but we still had to take out a hefty loan for the build.
Living with my mother-in-law was a nightmare. She constantly criticised me, pampered her daughter, and bossed me about. Even after we finished building our house, she tore down our fence and let her dogs roam through my garden, fully aware of my fear of them. She made it crystal clear she was in charge. No matter how many times I begged Edward to intervene, he insisted I was overreacting.
Eventually, I couldnt take it anymore. I went to court, determined to claim my share of the house and buy my own flat. But to my utter shock, I discovered my mother-in-law was the sole ownermy name wasnt anywhere on the deeds. How they had managed this deception is still beyond me. Suddenly, I was left homeless, with nothing to show for all Id invested.
Then Edward found out that Evelyn had inherited a flat from our father. Seizing the opportunity once more, he tried to break up their marriage by revealing to her husband that he was, in fact, the biological father of Evelyns daughter. I ended up divorcing Edward, and he went on to do the very same thing to Evelyn as he did to me.
I had no contact with my sister for ages, so it was sheer chance that I learned they were together. When Evelyn realised hed duped her too, she proposed we join forces.
We spoke to neighbours and soon uncovered that my mother-in-law and her son had purchased five plots by exploiting women just like us. The pattern was always the same: Edward would bring a woman home, divorce her after securing property or a flat, and shed be left with nothing.
We reached out to other victims and filed a group legal complaint. But by then, there was no one left to sueEdward had run off abroad. Only my mother-in-law remained, and now shes demanding we let her have the children, her only grandchildren.
She tried to strip us of parental rights, claiming we werent fit mothers because we didnt have our own places to live. But in court, it became clear that our housing predicaments were due to her own scheming. In the end, we were required to arrange for the children to visit their grandmother and couldn’t prevent contact.
The worst part is, shes turning the girls against us. She paints herself as the devoted grandmother and brands us as villains, wrecking our happiness and interfering as much as she can. She tells the girls to lie about smoking and drinking, and now theyre threatening to go to social services if we dont buy them a new tablet.
Ill have my grandchildrenyou just watch! my mother-in-law shrieks.
What are we supposed to do? How can we ever stand up to her? After all the heartache shes caused, she just refuses to leave us in peace.
