Rebecca was late to work again, but David couldnt have cared lesshe always carried himself as though he was the centre of the universe anyway. He fancied himself an expert in absolutely everything and never passed up the chance to share his priceless advice. According to David, Rebecca couldnt do anything right, and, to hear him tell it, she was just a bit thick. Despite her university education, he brushed off her achievements as if they were no more valuable than a used train ticket. Rebecca quietly tolerated his remarks, but those rose-tinted glasses shed worn at the start were beginning to slide off, and the true colours of their life together were coming into stark relief.
Each day, Rebecca found herself more wound up and vexed by her husbands behaviour. Shed learned to ignore his digs and to go along with his demands, simply to avoid his tediously long lectures. But that day, her patience finally ran out. She did what she should have done yonks agoshe stood up for herself.
After work, David strolled into the kitchen where Rebecca and their daughter were enjoying dinner. His muddy boots paid no mind to the freshly mopped floor. Rebecca asked him, calm but resolute, to take his shoes off, but David seemed to think hed gone unexpectedly deaf. So, she repeated herself, louder this time, enunciating with the force of a stern headmistress. This clearly caught David on the hop, and he was not best pleased.
Rebecca stood her ground, asserting her authority and questioning exactly who wore the trousers in the house. The row quickly escalated, all those years of irritation erupting like a Diet Coke and Mentos experiment. She plainly voiced her frustration, called David out for his lack of manners, and politely reminded him of her own accomplishments. She told him that, in future, if he wanted anything, hed better give her fair warning, as she was done jumping at his last-minute whims.
Unloading her pent-up emotions, Rebecca made it clear she wouldnt take his orders any longer, nor would she be cooking to satisfy his every little craving. She asserted her independence and her right to make decisions. For the first time in years, she felt as light as a feather and free as a bird.
Marching out of the house with a bin bag full of the spaghetti and sausages shed cooked, Rebecca felt positively invigorated. She completely ignored Davids protests. Two hours later, she returned, soaked through and shivering. Unexpectedly, David showed a flicker of genuine concernhe helped her into dry clothes and made her a proper cup of tea, just the thing to restore her spirits.
He tried to make peace, but Rebecca stood firm, reminding him in no uncertain terms that the old nonsense wouldnt be tolerated and that he needed to shape up or ship out. David realised hed have to buck his ideas up for the sake of his familyafter all, he was rather fond of his girls. Rebecca insisted he make a real effort to change, and David promised he would.
With a new sense of determination, David whipped up a carbonara for Rebecca as a gesture of goodwill and transformation. This turned out to be the spark that set their relationship on a new path, encouraging them both to work towards a much more harmonious future together.
