Mum, where have you been? I’ve looked everywhere for you! I was on holiday. I might have my own issues and affairs. And this is Philip. We’re going to live together.

Shall I expect you on Sunday? I asked my daughter.

Of course, she replied.

I busied myself preparing for my childrens visit, wanting to treat them to something nice. I cleaned the house top to bottom, tidied up, set the table, and made sure everything was just so. All that was left was to wait for my guests. But as the appointed time came and went, no one arrived. I started to worryperhaps something had happened to them. Id hoped to surprise them with a generous sum of money, knowing how much they dreamt of a new car. Eventually, I picked up the phone and called my daughter. She answered, her voice heavy with sleep.

Mum, I completely forgot we were coming over today.

Do you mean to say Ive spent two days getting everything ready for nothing? Especially since its my birthday today.

Mum, I promise well come by tomorrow. Ive just been so busy, it slipped my mind. Sorry.

I hung up the phone, feeling utterly deflated. All my preparations felt wasted. In a fit of disappointment, I threw away everything Id made for them. Then I packed my suitcase, took the money Id meant for my children, and decided to go on holiday to Brighton, by the sea. The holiday turned out to be delightful. One afternoon, while strolling through a park, a gentleman approached and asked if I fancied a cup of tea. His name was Philipa retired judge. Conversation with him came easily and we shared many stories; he had plenty of interesting tales, and I found myself opening up about my own life.

Before I knew it, wed both fallen for each other. Before I left, Philip asked if Id consider moving in with him. Ive got a flat and my pension, he said. We could spend our days together, go to the cinema, enjoy ourselves. I wasnt quite sure what to say. After all, I have children and grandchildren.

What about them? I asked.

They have their own lives now. Theyll come and visit us, Philip reassured me. Just then, I remembered how my daughter had acted, and decided to accept his offer.

A week later, I returned home. Pinned to my front door was a notice, asking for help finding a missing woman.

Theyre looking for you, arent they? Philip asked.

It must be my daughter, I replied.

She had no idea you were away, did she?

No, she didnt.

Suddenly, my daughter appeared on the stairs. Mum, where have you been? Weve been searching everywhere!

I was on holiday. Im allowed to have my own plans and my own adventures, you know. And this is Philipwell be living together.

She looked confused. I dont understand.

Theres nothing wrong with me. Dont you want me to be happy?

Well, yes. I suppose I do.

Good. Now, come alonglet me show you some of the lovely things Ive brought back from my trip.

Would you have had the nerve to make such a bold change?
