“My Wife’s Mum Is Wealthy—We’ll Never Need to Work!” My Mate Rejoiced

A good mate of mine called Peter had always fancied the idea of living the high life off someone elses fortune. He put in all sorts of effort to woo a girl from a wealthy family. It was clear as day he wasnt remotely in love with her, which made me think nothing good could ever come from such a marriage. Still, Peter was utterly convinced that a well-off wife was the key to an easy, happy life. That might have been trueif the girl herself actually knew how to make money. The real driving force behind her familys riches was her mother, who owned several sizeable shops around town.

I tried to reason with Peter one day:

You must realise they wont put up with a slacker very long. Theres dignity in independence and honest work.

Oh, come off it. The family trusts me completely! Besides, weve got a baby on the way, he said, grinning.

Try as I might, I just couldnt wrap my head around his mindset. It wasnt fair on the girl, not in the least. In my book, a man ought to work and provide for his family.

Some time passed, and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked Peter what he was doing for a living these days. Turned out, neither he nor his wife were employed they spent their days lounging about at home, playing video games, watching telly, or sleeping. Her mother fed and supported both of them. I have to admit, a pang of envy hit mePeter had managed to get exactly what he thought he wanted.

My mother-in-laws well-off. Well never need to work, he boasted, clearly delighted with his easygoing lifestyle.

Perhaps that would have gone on for years, but then business troubles hit. Her mums shop profits plummeted more than once. Eventually, she was forced to offer both her daughter and son-in-law jobs.

A month went by since I last saw Peter. Then my phone ranghe sounded anxious, and asked if he could borrow four thousand pounds for a couple of weeks.

Im looking for work. Once I get through an interview and land a job, Ill get an advance and repay you. Were absolutely skint, he admitted glumly.

So thats how his carefree life came to a close. Since then, both Peter and his wife started working. He paid back what he owed me. So much for living off a wealthy family. You cant go through life relying on someone else; youve got to stand on your own two feet. Only then can you count on real security and happiness. Thats what Ive learned watching Peters story unfold.
