My son was recently married. Of course, before the wedding, he brought his girlfriend to meet us several times, and we immediately took a liking to her. She was so polite, modest, truly lovely, and sharp as a tack. We were genuinely happy for our son, and as a family, we threw ourselves into preparing for their celebration.
For the wedding, my daughter-in-law had her hair styled so that her ears were clearly visible. She looked wonderful, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary at first. Then, I noticed a small mole appearing on her right earthe exact spot my lost daughter had hers. I was absolutely shaken. The resemblance was too strong to ignore, so I decided to ask a direct question and set my mind at ease.
Darling, I do hope you wont mind me asking, but were you by any chance adopted?
She seemed a bit surprised and replied, No, why would you ask that? Then she stood up and went off to dance with my son.
Her mother, seated nearby, must have overheard the exchange, because she quietly nodded at the woman beside her, confirming what I suspected. There was no need for secrecy any longer. Her parents confessed that they had adopted her when she was just a little girl.
Theyd been travelling along a country road one day when they came across a small child standing alone by the roadside, crying silently. With heavy hearts from years of longing for a childafter 15 years of unsuccessful attemptsthey didnt hesitate to take her in. Theyd never spoken about it to anyone.
That happened to be the very year I lost my own daughter. Id taken her with me to the market in London, and when I looked away for just a moment in the busy crowd, she had vanished. In such a vast city, she was lost like a single grain of sand on the shore. I searched for what felt like an eternity, but after countless hopeless attempts, I finally lost hope.
Now, to thinkmy son was about to marry her. My very own long-lost child, the one Id spent years yearning to find. Can you imagine such a thing? That out of all the people in the country, he should meet and fall for her.
The wedding was nearly called off. The girls parents were terribly worried, fearful that the young couple would never be able to build a happy family upon such a revelation. But I reassured them. After losing my daughter all those years ago, Id needed something to mend my broken spirit and give back to the world. So, I went to an orphanage and adopted a boy. Truth be told, he chose me rather than the other way round. In that way, we brought a little brightness into one anothers lives.
On that remarkable evening, two womens closely-held secrets came to lightsecrets born from a mothers love for her child.
When the guests heard the tale, it became the talk of the evening, and long after, too. Truly, it seemed nothing short of a miracle.
Was this just an incredible coincidence, or was it fate at work? I still wonder.
