After Clara married, her own behaviour towards her stepmother-in-law, Mrs. Bennett, grew noticeably cold. The reason simmered beneath the surface: Mrs. Bennett had refused to contribute a penny towards their wedding. The only silver lining was that they wouldnt be forced to live together, since Claras parents had kindly gifted the freshly-wed couple a spacious three-bedroom flat in Oxford. In stark contrast, Olivers mother had given them nothing more than a plain, inexpensive set of crockery. Furthermore, she had excused herself from the pottery-painting afternoon, citing poor health, which, truthfully, had secretly relieved Clara.
For a while, married life unfolded peacefully. Then one winter, Mrs. Bennett fell ill and could no longer manage alone in her cottage in Dorset. Although Clara squirmed at the thought of her mother-in-law moving in, there was simply no other option.
