Theres a kind of person you simply cant bear to spend time with. Hardly anyone enjoys having so-called toxic people in their lives. Let me share a story inspired by the experience of a friend of mine, based on her reflections.
I have a close relationship with a relativesomeone I get along with quite well. Were honest with each other, and we often visit one another. So, this time I went to Elizabeths house for a cup of tea. I picked up a cake on the way and headed over.
I hadnt chosen the best moment, as Elizabeth already had a visitor. As it turned out, her neighbour, Dorothy, was there. Dorothy is an elderly woman who drinks. She spends her entire pension on alcohol, and since she hates drinking alone, she often prowls the corridor looking for company. Shes dreadfully intrusive.
I always try to steer clear of Dorothy. I simply cant tolerate her. She speaks incessantly, with no sense of whats appropriate or not. So, whenever I encounter her, I try to act as coolly as possible. That day, I was already planning to leave, but Elizabeth gently insisted that I stay. I didnt argue, as I wasnt planning to be there for long. As the kettle started to boil, Dorothy launched into her usual ramblings.
Not everyone is able to deal with a person like Dorothy. Shes the kind that brings you to tears and then makes you laugh with disbelief. Elizabeth has peculiar tastesif I were in her shoes, I certainly wouldnt let such a tiresome neighbour into my flat.
I decided to excuse myself and leave quickly. Id heard quite enough nonsense for one afternoon. Later on, Elizabeth shared what happened after my departure. Another friend had come over to see her. At first, everything was calm, but then Dorothy started up again.
Things escalated to the point where Elizabeth and her friend argued.
You wouldnt believe itDorothy wound us up so much we almost came to blows! Thats never happened before…
At last, I understood what people meant by toxic. Dorothys the very example of it. Trouble seems to follow her, and arguments spring up out of nowhere. Even the neighbours have caught on; nobody wants anything to do with her. Elizabeth is the only one who seems to put up with her antics.
But now, shes starting to realise things for herself. Elizabeth explained further:
You see, Helena and I have been best friends for yearsthrough thick and thin. Now Im starting to believe Dorothys a pro at setting people against one another… We were squabbling over the most trivial things. I asked Helena how she felt, and she said it was almost as if she were under a spell. Can you believe it?
Elizabeth finally saw the truth. Theres no point trying to get along with everyoneits often better to avoid certain people entirely. As for me, I realised how lucky I am where I live. All my neighbours are perfectly agreeable.
Some time later, Elizabeth told me Dorothy had moved out. Her flat was up for sale, and shed gone to live with her daughter because of some family difficulties. The building was finally quiet again. Its remarkable how just one person can create so much havoc for others.
The company we keep, and the environment we live in, truly matter. I wish everyone could have decent neighbours and caring family. After all, our peace of mind is too precious to be wasted on troublemakers.
