My Fiancé’s Parents Made an Unusual Request, Asking Me and My Family to Provide Health Certificates—Followed by a Demand from My Future Mother-in-Law That I Couldn’t Bear

In England, arranging a marriage usually follows age-old customs, but as friends and family have shown, sometimes things dont go smoothly and friction can arise between the families involved. In my own experience, the troubles began with the parents of my fiancé, who were the first to speak up. Their main demand was that I undergo a medical examination. At first, I brushed it off, though it left me rather stunned. My parents were equally shocked and dismissed the request as nonsense. Still, my future mother-in-law wasnt satisfied with their response.

Much to my bewilderment, she insisted that not only I, but every member of my family, provide a medical certificate. This was unheard of for us. My father couldnt hide his irritation and left the room to keep from arguing. I was deeply embarrassed, while my fiancé just sat quietly, fully aware of his parents expectations. Later that evening, I discovered that my mother-in-law had arranged separate bedrooms for me and my fiancé. I wondered if it might be some family tradition and accepted it as their prerogative, even though it felt distinctly awkward.

Before wishing me good night, my mother-in-law informed me that the next morning, we all needed to visit a solicitors office to draft and sign a marriage contract. That was too much for me. I assured her Id be ready, but instead, I decided to leave. I packed my belongings and walked out, cutting off all ties with him on social media and changing my phone number, determined never to have contact with my fiancé or his peculiar parents again. Recognising that my boundaries, freedoms, and rights had been violated was vital. My advice to other young women is to look after themselves and never accept mistreatment or disrespect. No one should have the right to trample on your rights and freedoms, so dont hesitate to walk away from any situation where youre not given the respect you deserve.
