I recently turned seventy. My wife, sadly, did not live to see her own birthday and has passed away. On the day of my celebration, I was surrounded by my three sons, their wives, and my grandchildren. All my life, I had longed for a daughter, and now I ask my children if I might have a granddaughter someday. They reassure me, promising that it will happen.
The next morning, I visited the cemetery to pay my respects to my late wife. There, I unexpectedly met the widow of an old friend, and discovered that my friend had also died recently. We began to reminisce, sharing memories of our youth. Sitting together in a nearby café, she started to ask questions.
You used to date an English girl, didnt you? Why didnt things work out?
Well, back then things were different. Her parents wanted her to marry an Englishman, but I am not from their part of the country.
Have you ever contacted your daughter?
What daughter?
Yes, your daughter. Her name is Martha. When your girlfriend discovered she was expecting, her parents sent her away to the countryside. She learned that you had married someone else and never told you a thing.
In a hurry, I returned home, unsure how to share the news with my sons. I feared they might judge me, now that I wanted to find my daughter.
Yet, my children supported me. They confessed they had always wished for a sister. Together, we began searching. It turned out my English-born daughter was living in Manchester. Knowing her name made the search easier. I was unwell at the time, struggling with my health, but I believed I could find her. About a week later, I woke up in my room with a man sitting beside me.
You did well, you made it, he said.
I had to. Im searching for my daughter. Everyone is waiting for me at home.
He replied, Your family gathers outside the window every day; even the doctors are bemused that your relatives have made it a habit. Theyre out there now.
He helped me to the window. I looked out and saw my sons, their wives, my grandchildren, an elderly lady, and her daughter. A little girl with dark hair was running about.
Thats her! Thats my granddaughter! At last, I have a granddaughter!
And in that moment, I realised that happiness is not just found in what we hope for, but in the family we embrace. Life might bring unexpected paths, but love and acceptance lead us home.
