My son recently got married. Naturally, before that, he brought his girlfriend over several times to get to know us, and we took an immediate liking to her. She was polite, unassuming, beautiful, and clever. We were delighted for our son and prepared as a family for their celebration.
For the wedding, my daughter-in-law styled her hair in such a way that her ears were clearly visible. She looked lovely, and I didnt notice anything amiss. However, at one point, I spotted a mole on her right ear. It was identical to the one my lost daughter had. I was shaken to my core and felt compelled to confirm my suspicions.
“Dear, forgive me for asking something so direct, but were you by any chance adopted?”
She looked surprised. “No, why would you think that?” She smiled politely, then stood and went off to dance with my son.
Her mother, who was sitting nearby, had overheard us and gave a subtle nod of acknowledgement to my wife, as if confirming silently. It was no longer something they could keep hidden. Her parents confessed that they had adopted her when she was very young.
As it turned out, they had been travelling one day and came across a little girl, standing alone at the edge of a park, tears streaming down her face. Without hesitation, they decided to take her home with them. They themselves had tried for fifteen years to have children but it hadnt happened, so, to soften the ache in their hearts, they chose to adopt and never revealed the truth to anyone.
It was the very same year I lost my daughter. I was at the market and stepped away for only a moment. In the bustle of a busy city like London, with so many people everywhere, she was lost to me like a needle in a haystack. I searched for ages, but after hundreds of unsuccessful attempts, hope deserted me.
And now, my son was about to marry her. My very own long-lost child. What are the odds? Hed chosen her out of millions living in this country.
After the truth emerged, the wedding nearly fell apart. The girls parents were anxious and deeply sorry that the young couple might never know happiness together. But I reassured everyone. After losing my daughter, Id tried to heal by making a difference. I went to a childrens home and adopted a boy. Honestly, it felt as if he chose meof all the families he could have had. In doing so, we gave each other a second chance at happiness.
So, in one evening, two mothers heartfelt secrets came to light.
When the guests heard the whole tale, they discussed it for hours. It truly seemed like a miracle.
Looking back, I wonder whether it was coincidence or fate. Ive learned that lifes twists and turns may bring sorrow, but sometimes those same paths return to us what we thought wed lost forever.
