Charlie was curled up in the corner, tears streaming down his face. He just couldnt wrap his head around itwhat had he done to deserve this? Why had his mum and dad abandoned him and left him at the childrens home? All Charlie ever did was try his best to be good, to show them how much he loved them.
His birth mother had left him at the hospital right after he was born. Not long after, he was taken in by Karen and William, a couple who hadnt managed to have children themselves. They decided to adopt him from the childrens home. But William always struggled to bond with Charlie. He just couldnt see him as his own son, kept him at arms length, you know? But Karen, she really doted on the boycuddled him, fussed over him, did all the mum thingsbut deep down, it seemed like she still felt there was a wall between them.
Time went by, and Charlie grew up in their house, always looking up to his adoptive parents, eager for their approval. Then, out of the blue, Karen found out she was pregnant. She was absolutely chuffed, floating on air. When she told William, it was like all their Christmases had come at once.
But after that, everything changed. Charlie didnt seem to matter anymorehe just seemed to get in their way, always under their feet. William started losing his temper, shouting at Charlie, and even hit him now and again. Eventually, Karen and William decided theyd had enough; they went to court and gave up all their parental rights, sending Charlie back to the childrens home. He was so littlebarely fivewith no one to look out for him and no way to understand why hed been let down all over again.
After the court hearing, Karen quietly told Charlie hed be going back to the home, and brushed off his desperate pleas for her not to leave. She simply turned on her heels and walked off. Charlie was heartbroken, absolutely guttedbetrayed not once but twice, first by his own mum, and then by the people hed learned to call mum and dad.
The judge who presided over everything, a woman named Catherine, just stood there, taking it all in. It really got to her, watching a little boy go through something so cruel, so she had a word with one of the carers from the home and said shed like to adopt him herself. Catherine wasted no time getting the papers sorted, and soon enough she was bringing Charlie home as her own.
From the very start, Catherine would speak so gently to him, calling him little Charlie. It didnt take long before his old life faded into the background; he started clinging to Catherine and truly seeing her as family. The years rolled on, and Charlie found his stride at schoolhe even left secondary school with top marks, which everyone thought was brilliant. He went off to study medicine, and after qualifying, landed a proper job at a well-respected GP clinic.
One day, a man came to his clinic, and as soon as he walked in, Charlie recognised himit was William, his first adoptive dad. William was a shadow of the man he used to behe explained that after his wife died giving birth, and the baby didnt make it either, hed started drinking heavily and almost lost everything. In the end, a lady called Sarah helped him out of that dark place and got him to seek help.
So thats how William ended up at Charlies clinic, sitting in front of him. Charlie still remembered the pain from all those years ago, but he was a doctor now, bound by his oath and his own sense of compassion. He treated William just as he would any other patient. Some might say fate had already dished out enough punishment to William and Karen. As for Charlie, he never looked for revengelife had already seen to that. Instead, he chose to stand tall, showing that kindness can leave more of a mark than bitterness ever could.
