Emily and Peter bumped into each other quite by accident in a neighbouring town during one of Emilys business trips. Despite Peter being twelve years her seniora detail that seemed to make her family rather twitchythey fell for each other instantly. Peter was frequently hopping on trains to visit Emily in her city. Three months later, he proposed, promising faithfully to be a thoughtful husband whod handle all her needs. Family drama quickly followed: Emilys parents and brother aired their objections, loudly and repeatedly, about the age gap. Yet Emily, stubborn as her old spaniel, followed her heart and moved in with Peter. Not long after, they officially tied the knot.
Peter, it should be said, was well-off. He held a respectable position at a well-known corporation and ran a highly successful corner shop. On top of that, he rented out his bachelor flat, which kept the pounds rolling in nicely. Thanks to his impressive finances, Peter bought a posh two-bedroom flat and drove a shiny, expensive car that made the neighbours roll their eyes on Sundays.
Eight years slid by. Emily finished university and, with Peters help and a spot of networking, landed a job at his mates company. Everything seemed tickety-boo, except that Emilys parents never forgave her for her rebellious streak. They cut off all contact, simmering in their own disappointment. Meanwhile, Emily heard through the grapevine that her brother had got hitched, lived with their parents, was flush with cash, and was forever jetting off abroad, updating his car like it was a fashion accessory.
A few weeks ago, Emilys mum requested a chatan event about as rare as a sunny bank holiday. Mum suggested Emily borrow the money from Peter, just to smooth things over with the family. Emily hesitated, for several sensible reasons: her brother hadnt lifted a finger to secure his own place, and she’d spent eight years making do without any parental support, finding contentment in her own little world. So, after a bit of soul searching and a second mug of tea, Emily politely declined the request. Her family responded with melodramatic condemnation, insisting their door was forever shut to her.
Unfazed, Emily stood her ground. She realised her life had moved forward, and she was quite happy to leave all that familial melodrama behindwith a sigh of relief that echoed all the way to her shiny new flat.
