You Pay the Bill Because You’re the One Using More!

So, listen to this Claire got married as soon as she turned twenty. Her husband, Richard, was a fair bit older, but honestly, the age gap never put her off. She stood by him like a brick wall, you know? Lately, though, shes started to regret ever getting involved with him. Heres whats been going on.

Theyre living in this two-bedroom flat that belongs to Richard, in Oxford, by the way. Hes got a good job and earns a tidy sum, but hes away a lot for work, always off on business trips. Meanwhile, Claires running her own little business from home and studying for her degree through Open University. And, as usual, nobodys let her off the hook with the housework. She does her best to keep the flat tidy and cooks proper meals.

Richard takes care of paying the bills I mean, Claires never really gotten involved with that. But lately, hes started moaning that shes using too much water and electricity. At first, she just ignored it, but then his nagging started to really get on her nerves.

He turned round and said, From now on, youre paying for the water and electricity. Im working round the clock, always travelling for work. If youre racking up the bills, you can pay for them! Ill deal with the rest but those two are down to you. If you dont pay, well, theyll cut you off.

Claire had just about had enough. She shot back, What a lovely home weve built here! Have you ever wondered why I use all that water and electricity? Its probably because Im doing the cooking, cleaning, laundry, and working on my laptop! And since when are you so bothered? Am I supposed to scrimp on water, sit around in the dark, and wash the plates in a muddy puddle? Have you finally lost the plot?

If you dont want to pay for it, thats fine but neither do I. I could move back in with Mum and Dad, and I wouldnt have to count every time I washed my hands or worry about how many kilowatt hours Ive used! You can do the washing up, cleaning, and all the saving, thank you very much. Oh, and youll need to get used to wearing shirts that arent exactly fresh from the wash. You like clean shirts? Well then, perhaps you should ask yourself how much water and electricity the washing machine uses!

After that, Richard didnt have anything more to complain about.

What do you think did Claire do the right thing or not?
