SPARE PART IN HER OWN HOME
You know, Margaret had spent her entire life building that house with her husband, putting her heart and soul into every single brick. When her son got married to Jessica, she truly believed thered be more laughter and warmth in their home. But just a few months later, something in the air changed and it felt heavy somehow.
Jessica began a sort of silent battle. First, she rearranged all the furniture without so much as a word to Margaret, then tossed out her old but much-loved curtains. Margaret kept quietanything for her sons happiness. But Jessica wanted more than that. She wanted to be the only mistress of the house.
Mum, your tellys too loud in your room, Ive got a headache, Jessica would grumble during the day. Mum, please stay out of the kitchen when Im cooking, you just get in the way, shed snap in the evening.
At the same time, Jessica would whisper something different to Margarets son, David: Your mum isnt herself, shes always moaning at me and picking faults. Im so exhausted, I cant stop crying. Poor David was torn, caught right between the two women he loved most, but over time he began siding with his wife.
Everything came to a head one chilly evening. Margaret wasnt feeling wellher temperature was upso she went to the kitchen to ask for a cup of tea, but as she walked past the sitting room, she overheard Jessica talking.
David, Jessica was saying, I cant take this any longer. Your mums got the biggest room in the house. Why dont we move her out to the garden annex? Shed be more comfortable, wed have more space. Or better yet maybe she could go and stay with her sister out in the country?
David hesitated: Jessica, I dont think we can do that this is her home.
It was her home, but now its ours! Jessica snapped. If she stays, Im going back to my parents. You choose.
Margaret didnt wait for Davids answer. She walked in, pale but holding her head high.
Theres no need to choose, she said quietly. Jessica, youre right, the home should belong to the family. But legally, this house is mine, and Im not about to be pushed out to the annex. David, I love you more than anything, but if you agree that Im the spare part here, the doors open for the both of you. Pack your things.
Jessica had counted on Margarets weakness but she was thoroughly mistaken. When David saw his mothers eyes brimming with tears and the cold calculation in his wifes face, it was like he woke up. That night, he stayed. Jessica leftstorming out, shouting that theyd both regret it.
A year has passed. David still lives with his mum and has met someone new, a woman who truly values comfort and respects her elders. And Margaret has realised something important: kindness shouldnt come at the cost of your own dignity. If you let someone into your home, you need to make sure they dont throw you out of it.
