As I prepare dinner in remembrance of our late father, my brother Edwards behaviour stuns everyone. Hes been working abroad for over fifteen years and has only returned to England twice during all that time. Now, on the ninth day since our fathers passing, he suddenly appears back home. Edward seems agitated, persistently asking about the whereabouts of certain things, turning the entire house upside down as he rummages through our parents belongings.
The cook is taken aback, especially since Edward has been away for so long while my sister Emily cared devotedly for both our father and mother. But Edward hasnt come home to pay his respects. Hes searching for something. Emily, bewildered, had expected him to show some support during this difficult time.
Instead, his actions are far from supportive. Edward questions the ownership of various items, insisting that everything rightfully belongs to him. He presents documents, claiming our parents signed over all their assets to him twenty years ago. He makes Emily feel guilty, suggesting shes trying to take control of his house. Hurt and in tears, Emily eventually leaves, followed by a few others equally disturbed by Edward’s conduct.
Despite the mounting tension, Edward stays on for another week, changing all the locks and fitting bars to every door and window before finally heading back to his wife. Not long afterwards, a neighbour from Edwards place abroad contacts us with worrying news; Edward is seriously ill, his prognosis bleak. His health is deteriorating, much like our fathers did. When his wife hears, she urges him to return to England, not wanting the burden of caring for him.
Yet Emilys sense of duty to family is unwavering. Despite all that Edward has put her through, she feels he is her brother, and she must look after him. Her own daughter, however, is anxious that Emily will end up sacrificing her entire life and wellbeing for an ungrateful brother. She confronts her mother, emphasising how important it is that Emily also spends time with her and the grandchildren, who love their grandmother dearly.
Torn between her brothers needs and her daughters pleas, Emily is left deeply conflicted. She pities Edward, understanding his predicament, yet she also sees the merit in her daughters position. The decision weighs heavily on her heart as she tries to work out whats best for herself and her family.
