Charlotte is 37 and shes never been married. She worked for a while as an accountant. But she still just cant seem to find what gives her life real meaning, you know? She’s never quite discovered her true calling.
She was absolutely shattered that morningbarely dragged herself out of bed, honestly. Charlotte forced herself up and out for another shift at work. Shed recently started working as a waitress. On days like this, she had to be at the cafés summer garden, serving customers on the terrace. If it was her turn for the early shift, that meant clocking in at six in the morningpeople would start arriving by seven.
Because she lived out in one of the London suburbs, she had to leave even earlierabout five oclock, actuallyto make sure she wasnt late. The train connections never seemed that reliable, and you know how the buses are: sometimes theyre running behind, or get caught in the city traffic.
Anyway, when she arrived, Charlotte got right to it. She wiped down all the tables before opening the terrace, humming a pop song she liked under her breath. There was always a fine layer of dust from the night before. She wanted everything spotless for when the first guests arrived.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, she heard a little voice. My mum sings that song too. It startled Charlotte, because it was ridiculously early for anyone to be out and about yet.
She turned round to see this small girl, maybe five or six, standing alone. Charlotte glanced around but didnt spot anyone else. What are you doing here, sweetheart? Youre on your own? So early in the morning?
The girl just shrugged. I was out for a walk. And to get something to eatfor me and my brother. Miss, do you have any bread? she asked, her voice wavering a bit. It was clear she was hungry.
Of course I do, Charlotte replied gently. Come sit down, Ill go and see what I can find in the kitchen. Wheres your brother?
Hes at home, just around the corner, with our nan.
Charlotte didnt pryit felt wrong to press. She figured there had to be a story and waited for the little girl to share more.
Dad and mum died ages ago, and grannys very old now. She forgets things a lot, she even forgets us sometimes.
Charlotte was absolutely floored. She honestly didnt know what to say.
The girl hastily added, Dont worry, I wont be any trouble. I only need some bread. Ill take it home to my brother and nan.
Wait, dont go anywhere. Ill come with you. Promise me youll stay right here, Charlotte insisted softly.
She dashed inside and asked a colleague to cover for her, saying shed be out for a bit. Then Charlotte walked the girl back to her place.
The little one let them in with her own key. Inside there was a toddlera boy about eighteen months oldplaying on the floor. He beamed when he saw them. In the next room, their grandmother lay on the bed, looking out of it, lost in her own world. She didnt even notice them coming in.
Charlottes heart sank. She muttered, What on earth is happening here?
She called for an ambulance straight away. The paramedics came and took the grandmother to hospital; it was obvious she was nearing the end. With the children’s family gone, Charlotte just couldnt leave them there. She brought both children back to her flat.
Her own son, who was thirteen, was at home when she arrived. He was a bit shocked to see two extra kids in the sitting room, but when Charlotte explained, he absolutely backed her up, bless him.
The thing was, Charlotte and her son never argued. Theyd always had a close, honest relationship, and helping each other out was just part of the way they lived. He didnt mind watching the kids for a few hours while his mum was at work.
The grandmother passed away ten days later. That meant the two little ones would be sent to the councils care home. Charlotte couldnt bear the thoughtthey were sweet, polite, and had already become a part of their little family. She knew what life in a care home could be like for them. Thats when she decided to step up and apply to become their legal guardian.
She had to quit her job as a waitress and took her old friend up on an offer to return to accounting. He even helped her with all the legal paperwork. In just a few weeks, Charlotte officially became their foster carer.
So thats why you fancied being a waitress all this time! her mate joked when she visited. You were always plotting to rescue some kids!
Charlotte just laughed. Yeah, seems I was laying the groundwork all along.
Honestly, who would have thought life would turn out like this? She never imagined shed go from living alone with her teenage son to suddenly having three kids and making big career decisions. Shed never thought of herself as especially strong, but here she wasrising to the challenges life had thrown at her, and finding her own purpose at last.
