Were driving along the A303, a winding road through the English countryside, not far from Salisbury. The rain has left the tarmac slick, and everything outside is wrapped in the quiet stillness of early evening. Im with my husband, chatting idly while we look forward to getting home soon.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a massive stag leaps right into our path. My husband barely manages to slam on the brakes in time. The car shudders to a halt, my heart racing in my chest. The stag stands just a metre from our bonnet, rising to its full, intimidating height. Its antlers look even larger up close, and the animal fixes us with a piercing stare.
Neither of us moves. The stags gaze is unwavering, and then, ever so slowly, it takes a step towards the car. Every muscle in my body tenses. Im convinced, for a brief and terrifying moment, that the animal is going to charge us. The thin barrier of glass and steel suddenly feels like nothing at all.
My husband shifts into reverse, inching the car back as slowly and carefully as he can. We both know: if the stag comes at us, theres precious little we can do about it. Im frozen with fear, unable to tear my eyes away from the creature.
And thats when, without warning, something extraordinary happens, leaving us both stunned. A huge, ancient oak, growing by the roadside, comes crashing down with a tremendous crash. It falls just metres awayany closer and it might have landed right on top of us. We are unbelievably lucky to have missed it.
The stag jerks in alarm, fixes its gaze on the fallen tree, then wheels around and bounds back into the forest. Within moments, the road is silent again, as if nothing happened at all.
Even now, I keep replaying the whole event in my mind. Was the stag going to attack us? Was it trying to warn us? Or did the sound of the tree simply frighten it away? Ill never really know. But I wont ever forget that look in its eyes.
