I paid for a holiday so my mum could help me and my daughter—turns out she booked herself a holiday instead.

A year and a half ago, my husband and I became parents. We welcomed a beautiful baby girl into our lives. So this year, even though our daughter is still quite young, my husband and I decide to take a holiday together. When my mum comes round to visit, I tell her about our plans.

She says:

How are you planning to relax with such a little one? You wont have a proper break at all. My neighbour just got back from holidayher children brought her along to help with their little ones. Id come too, but simply havent got the money.

Of course, I pick up on my mums hint, but I dont respond right away. We decide to discuss it and have a proper think. The next day, I tell my mum wed really like her to join us. But Im upfront with her:

Listen, Mum, my husband will cover your whole trip. Youll have your own room and hell sort out your tickets as well. Well even give you some extra spending money for bits and bobs. But well need your help while were away. Ill give you some cash on topjust please dont tell my husband!

She agrees happily. Soon enough, were off. We spend the first day together. After the flight, were worn out and hit the sack early. The following evening, my husband asks my mum:

Would you mind having your granddaughter in your room tonight? Wed really like to go out to a restaurant, just the two of us!

Mum replies, Id love to, but Im afraid I cant tonight. I booked two excursions yesterday and Im off bright and early tomorrow!

Im really taken aback. Mum, hang on! Whats going on? Youre supposed to help us with the baby. Thats what we all agreed from the start!

She says, Well, I only booked two excursions. Just want two days to myself for a proper holiday, then I promise Ill help with the little one!

We agree reluctantly. Two days pass, and then my mum tells us:

I think Ive come down with something! Youll have to look after your daughter for nowI dont want to pass it on to her!

But Mum, you dont look ill at all! No sniffles, no coughnothing! I say, truly surprised.

A week goes by. She keeps grumbling about feeling under the weather. Then one day, I catch her happily tucking into an ice cream.

Mum! What are you doing? What about your sore throat? Or are you not actually ill at all? Have you just been making excuses these last few days? I ask, hurt.

She replies, Well, I need a break too! I work hard, and Im exhausted. Im your mother, not your nanny!

Im furious. But the whole deal was youd get a holiday, and in return, youd help us with our child. Instead, youre simply taking it easy while were struggling!

I feel really let down by her. In the end, I barely speak to her for the rest of the trip. We return home, but we still arent on speaking terms. Three months have gone by, and I still cant forgive her for what she did.
