Kates world turned upside down when her father, grappling with mounting debts and a lack of prospects at home, made the difficult decision to seek work abroad. She was just two years old when she watched her father pack his battered suitcase, promising that his absence would be short-lived. But the months stretched into years, and he remained far away, faithfully sending home pounds to keep the family afloat.
With her father out of the picture, Kate, her mother, and her younger sister managed to live in relative comforthis paycheques from distant Birmingham arriving like clockwork. Yet, the ache of his absence could never be soothed by money, and life dealt another blow when Kates mother fell seriously ill. Despite a long and valiant struggle, her mother passed away, and suddenly it fell to Kate, still only a teenager, to care for her little sister as both guardian and parent.
Even while attending university, Kate had barely a moment to herself. Days blurred between lectures, coursework, and changing nappies or cooking meals for her sister. When her mothers funeral came and went with no sign of her father, Kate felt a fierce sense of betrayal burn within her. That pain hardened into resentment, and she decided she could no longer accept her fathers money. With dogged determination, Kate took on a part-time job at a local bookshop, managing to support herself and her sister without a single penny from her father.
Then came another turn of fateher grandfather passed away, leaving behind the familys modest cottage on the outskirts of Oxford and an ancient, sputtering Morris Minor. One gloomy afternoon, as Kate tried to coax the reluctant car into life in hopes of selling it, the engine gave a mournful sigh and died. Confused and frustrated, she was startled by a sleek black Range Rover pulling alongside her on the narrow lane.
To her disbelief, the man who climbed out was her fatherolder, weary, his expression awash with regret. He offered assistance and asked for a moment to talk, but Kates guard shot up like iron gates. Words caught in her throat, she resisted any attempt at reconciliation, her heart pulsing with years of hurt.
As her father drove away, his loneliness visible in the rear-view mirror, Kate was left standing in the lane, torn between deeply-rooted resentment and a longing she could barely admit. The encounter churned a storm of emotions within her, and while her father realised too late the weight of his choices, the question remainedcould lost time and old wounds ever truly heal? Only the slow passing of seasons would tell if they could ever bridge the vast distance between them.
