After Monica married Sam against her parents’ wishes, they completely erased her from their lives. Eight years later, though, Monica’s mother made an unexpected phone call, asking her a question that sent chills down Monica’s spine.

I remember how Emily and Ben first metquite by coincidencein a neighbouring town during one of her work trips. Despite a considerable age gap of twelve years between them, they fell head over heels for each other. Ben started travelling frequently to her city just to see her. Three months in, he proposed to Emily, promising to always be a caring husband and look after every need she might have.

Emilys parents and her brother objected fiercely because of the age difference, but she followed her heart and moved in with Ben. Soon after, they officially registered their marriage. Ben was financially securehe held a respected position at a renowned firm and ran a successful grocery shop. On top of that, he rented out his old one-bedroom flat, bringing in steady income. Thanks to his prosperity, Ben bought himself a new two-bedroom apartment and drove a fancy luxury car.

Eight years down the line, Emily finished university, and Ben helped her land a job at a friends company. Things seemed to be going well for them, even though Emilys parents never forgave her for going against their wishes and stopped all contact. In the meantime, Emily heard from friends that her brother had tied the knot, lived with their parents, and was doing well financially. He travelled abroad frequently and was always upgrading his car.

A few weeks ago, Emilys mother reached out and requested a chat. During their conversation, her mum started hinting that Emily ought to help her brother financiallyeither by supporting him to buy a flat or by sending over a substantial amount of money. Her mother suggested that Emily could borrow the sum from Ben if she wanted to mend the family ties. However, Emily hesitated for several reasons: her brother had made no effort to secure his own home, and she had lived independently and happily without her parents’ support for eight years, content with the life shed built. In the end, Emily decided to refuse their requests.

Her relatives were harsh, condemning her decision and telling her the doors to their home would forever be closed. Still, Emily stood her ground, realising that her life had moved forward and she was genuinely happy putting the past behind her.

Reflecting on all this, Ive learned that standing up for your own choices, even when its difficult, brings a sense of peace and self-worth. Sometimes, moving ahead means leaving old burdens behind.
