Robert and Emily have been friends since nursery. They live next door to each other, so their parents decided to put them in the same school and the same class. They even asked the teacher to seat them together at the front of the classroom. After all, with so many children in the class, especially boys, Robert could look out for Emily if anyone gave her trouble. Both children were delighted to start school, and learning came easily to them.
When they moved up to Year 3, Emilys mother noticed a changeher daughter didnt act like herself anymore. She seemed anxious all the time and started refusing to go to school. One day, Emily begged to be transferred to another school. This took her mother completely by surprise, and she rang Roberts mum to see if things were all right on their end. Sadly, it turned out things were just as troubling for Robert.
Robert too asked to be moved to a different school. After lessons finished that day, Roberts mum noticed her son had bruises on his body. Together, both mothers decided to visit the school to find out what was happening to their children.
The teacher tried reassuring them, insisting that everything at school was fine and perhaps the children had gotten into an argument outside the school grounds. But just then, a noisy group of children burst into the classroom, shouting. The mothers looked round and saw several boys pulling at Roberts clothes, while others targeted Emily across the room.
The women hurried to shield their children from the blows, but no one seemed to pay attention. The teacher attempted to bring order too. One girl dashed off to fetch the headteacher, and only then did things begin to settle down.
Both mothers spoke up, saying they wouldnt let the matter rest. They wanted the parents of the bullies summoned to school, or else they would go to the police and file an official complaint about the assaults. The headteacher calmed them down and promised to invite the other parents in the next day, assuring them they would all meet to discuss the issue.
Walking them out, the headteacher explained in a low voice that the bullies were children from wealthy families. They never listened to anyone, interrupted teachers in lessons, and tormented other pupils. Their parents had been invited before but nothing changed, as they didnt seem any more polite or reasonable than their children.
The next day, Emily and Roberts mothers arrived at school at the appointed time. The bullies parents were already there. Just as the teacher had warned, those parents shouted, defended their children, and refused to listen to what anyone said. They were outright rude to the teacher. Only the headteacher managed to calm them, though only for a short while.
No proper decision was reached, as the unruly parents soon left the meeting, telling everyone not to make a fuss over trifles. The headteacher sighed, lamenting, What can you do? These parents helped fund the school repairs, so asking them to take their children elsewhere isnt an option.
Back home, both children explained that those boys picked on everyone in their class. If a boy was caught alone in the hallway, the bullies would catch and beat him. Robert and Emily got attacked because they were close friendssomething the bullies took issue with. Eventually, both mums decided to transfer their kids to a different school. The headteacher ended up resigning, unable to work any longer with such unruly children and their parents.
