“You’ll Grow Old Alone! – Words I Heard from a Man”

I met Adam a year ago. He promised me loyalty and devotion, swearing his feelings for me were genuine. And for a while, it seemed we had a lot in common. Both of us had weathered unhappy marriages. We both needed comfort and understanding. It truly felt like wed finally found that in each other. But in the end, he turned out to be nothing more than a freeloader, taking advantage of my kindness in every way possible.

My friends had warned me not to rush into things and certainly not to offer him a place to stay. But I refused to listen to anyone. It didnt even faze me that at thirty, he didnt have a proper job. In fact, he was pretty much homeless. And he couldnt even drive. But all I saw was the romance, letting my heart make decisions like a naive teenager.

The turning point was the night he didnt come home, and the next morning when I realised my money was gone, I finally woke up. That was the moment of truth.

I even tried to help him find work. He let me feed him, even relied on me for new clothes. I took him out to places hed never been beforerestaurants, shopping centresand, on the surface, he behaved himself. He was polite around my family and friends, never causing a scene. I genuinely believed hed eventually sort himself out and change for the better.

But I was mistaken. My patience wore thin and I had no choice but to ask him to leave my house. Even then, he tried to walk out with the phone Id given him, but I put my foot down and told him he could only take what was his to begin with.

Did I feel insulted? Absolutely! Do I regret wasting a whole year of my life on him? Without a doubt. In the end, my mistake cost me dearlyquite literally, in pounds and pence. He took whatever he could from me. But Im determined to be wiser from now on.

Please, dont let yourself be fooled the way I was. Be cautious and attentive. Always check just how genuine your partner is. If you spot a parasite, dont hesitate to cut them out. Respond in kind and stand your ground.
