Today, I find myself unable to sleep, still trying to come to terms with everything that has happened. My wife, Emily, confessed to me about her affair. She told me herself, almost begging through tears for forgiveness. I still cant quite understand how Emily could betray me. Then again, shes always been unpredictable and has done impulsive things before.
I remember just two days after our wedding, Emily revealed shed taken out a sizable loan, and now both of us were saddled with the debt. I was shocked but thought we could work it out together. Later, not long after that conversation, Emily fell ill quite suddenlywe had to call for an ambulance. It turned out shed suffered a miscarriage and was experiencing complications; until then, I hadnt even known she was pregnant.
The thing is, were both doing well at work, earning more than enough, she explained to me afterwards, I didnt want to disrupt our financial progress with a baby. And now, after all that, the betrayal.
To overcome her guilt and hoping Id forgive her, Emily suggested something truly bizarre: she said I should have an affair as well, just so she wouldnt have the moral upper hand. Emily even introduced me to a tall, striking blonde friend of hersSophiehoping Id take the bait. But I couldnt bring myself to go through with it. The whole situation seemed absurd.
Whats wrong, arent you a real man? Sophie teased. Im just an ordinary bloke, I replied, and I cant cheat on my wife deliberately.
I came home in a foul mood, unable to look at Emily or speak to her, and eventually packed my things and went to stay with a mate. Some time later, Emily called me. Im pregnant, she said. Youll have to come back home to your family.
But I no longer wanted Emily, the baby, or the house. Then, as fate would have it, I bumped into Sophie again in the supermarket. What are you doing here? she asked. I thought Emilys pregnancy plan had worked.
A suspicious feeling crept in. I asked Emily to show me the scan photos or a proper letter from her doctor confirming the pregnancy. Why cant you just take my word for it? she protested. Not after your betrayal, I told her. I cant.
Emily had nothing to show me. Thats when I knew shed lied to me yet again. I filed for divorce.
Looking back, I realise that trust and honesty are everything. No relationship will survive without them, and sometimes letting go is the only way to hold on to your self-respect.
