A surprised friend once asked, I wonder why they didnt leave anything to your husband? And dont their grandchildren need something as well?
Oh, who can really understand their thinking? replied Mary with a sigh. Their youngest is still single and already has a three-bedroom flat in Stratford, as well as two other two-bedroom flats. On top of that, he owns a three-storey cottage in the country. Apparently, that still isnt enough for him. And all of that was given to him by his parents! Meanwhile, my husband has been left with absolutely nothing.
Mark and Mary had been married for twelve years, and together they had two children, aged six and ten. Mary had always found it difficult to get along with her in-laws, who continuously interfered in their lives and insisted on telling them what they should and shouldnt do. It was bad enough that her mother-in-law criticised Marys choices and even insisted she be called Mum.
I already have a mother and I dont need another, Mary replied firmly to her demanding mother-in-law.
Yet the real strain began after the birth of their eldest daughter. Victoria, her mother-in-law, began showing up unannounced at Marys door, but Mary refused to let her in, ignoring her calls and knocks completely. In the end, Victoria seemed to recognise how intrusive her behaviour had become, and she stopped meddling in their lives.
With the occasional help of her own mother, Mary managed to manage the children just fine. When they grew older, the family moved far from their paternal grandmother.
Marks parents were genuinely wealthy and cultured people, who delighted in travelling, attending shows, and dining out with friends. They spoke to Mary and Mark only rarely, and, even around holidays, it was often revealed at the very last minute that theyd gone away.
Suddenly, Mary and Mark learned that his parents intended to leave everything to Marks younger brother. Mary simply couldnt let it go and decided to ring her mother-in-law for an explanation.
What did you really expect? came the frosty reply. You wouldnt let me see my grandchildren and you turned Mark against us. But my youngest never forgot us! He calls and visits, so its only right.
