A few days ago, my son rang me. I could immediately tell from his voice that he was unwell. A mother always knows. He asked me to come over, explaining that his wife, knowing full well hed come down with something, had packed her things and gone off to spend time with her friends. He had no one to make him a proper cup of tea or whip up some soup.
To make matters worse, she wasnt even picking up his calls. Although it was late, I hurried over to his flat. On the way, I popped into the chemists and picked up some medicine, all the while fuming about her. What sort of woman leaves her poorly husband alone to go galavanting with friends? My lad was in a very bad way. When I saw him, I nearly rang for an ambulance, but he pleaded with me to wait.
He looked dreadful. The flat was practically empty of anything useful. Thank goodness Id come with medicine and brought some food along. I could barely hold my tongue. Honestly, what sort of wife behaves like this? She left him ill, there were no medicines in the flatnothing but her slimming tablets and an echo coming from the fridge. I made my son a nice cup of tea and dashed off to the corner shop to pick up some groceries. He needed something proper to eat.
Once hed eaten and had a bit of rest, he started to perk up, and his fever eventually subsided. Then, at about three in the morning, his darling of a wife stumbled in, reeking of alcohol. Clearly, shed had a jolly time. She didnt listen to a word I said about the medicine, let alone show any concern. I held my tongue, only for the sake of my sons frail state. But he looked ready to start a row himself.
If theres anything Ive learnt, its that love sometimes blinds us to common sense. No matter how many warnings you give, people need to see the truth with their own eyes. I only hope my son finds the strength to make the right decisions from now on.
