The Recipient Was Rude to Me

Ive always thought of myself as a decent person, never stingy or selfish in the slightest. If someone truly needed something and I could spare it, I would give it away freelyno hesitation. Sometimes, its simply right to share what you have; the good book says as much.

One particular day, I felt compelled to give away a winter coat I no longer wore. Perhaps someone out there desperately needed something warm and didnt have the means. Mine had hardly been usedjust a handful of timesand it was bought for a fair sum.

So, I posted it on one of those local Facebook groups. It took no time at all to hear back: a woman messaged me privately, and we arranged to meet that evening at 9 oclock.

To my surprise, the doorbell rang at midnight. Whos there? I called out, a bit wary. Im here for the coatwe agreed, didnt we? she answered, sounding a little irritable. We said nine, and its now twelve at night. Surely you realise people might be asleep at this hour? Cant this wait till tomorrow?

No, I want it tonight!

The cheek of the womanI could hardly believe it! Even so, I fetched the coat for her. Then, without a hint of gratitude, she insisted she needed to try it on first. Im not about to do this out on the street, she huffed. At least let me come up to your flat.

My children are asleep, I said, hoping that would end the discussion. Fine, Ill use the lift then, she replied brusquely.

She gave a little snort, snatched the coat from me, and left without even as much as a thank you.

In spite of everything, I did hand over the coat. But honestly, Ive never encountered such rudeness in my life. I swore to myself then and there that Ill never give away anything again. Some people just have no appreciation at all.
