Two years ago, Emilys grandmother passed away, leaving her a cottage in the countryside, surrounded by an expansive lawn and a thriving vegetable patch. The place was woven through her childhood memoriesafternoons spent playing among daisies, laughter under the old oak tree, and helping her grandmother with the garden chores. Every weekend, she journeyed there with her family and her mother-in-law to bask in the crisp country air and share in the bounty of apples and blackberries. The relationship with her mother-in-law was always polite and uneventful, without argument or awkwardness.
As the harvest season loomed, Emily had readied everything for her annual marathon of jams, chutneys, and pickles. Giant pots lined the kitchen, sugar piled high, and empty jars waited to be filled. But when she arrived, the world tilted oddlyevery last currant, gooseberry, and raspberry had vanished, as though swept away by an unseen tide. Neighbours muttered that some local lads had been seen in the garden at picking time, but that explanation floated away, nonsensicalit would have taken them an entire day to strip every branch and bramble.
Suddenly, her aunt, who lived next door, rushed over, cheeks flushed with excitement. She declared that Emilys mother-in-law had visited the day before and left with two enormous buckets overflowing with wild fruit. Emilys mood curdled: anger and confusion battled in her heart.
She confronted her mother-in-law, who, unmoved and composed as ever, admitted she had taken every last berry. She explained that she wished to provide her grandchildren with vitamins and simply couldn’t afford the extortionate prices at the greengrocer. Emily could hardly believe what she was hearing and voiced her outragenow she would have to pay shop prices for everything she needed for winter, just like everyone else.
That evening, as dusk settled, Emily recounted the strange episode to her husband. He too was stunned by his mothers actions. Determined to keep matters under her control, Emily retrieved the keys to the cottage from her mother-in-law and kept them herself. From then on, her mother-in-law could only visit the cottage with them, a silent guarantee that nothing as surreal would happen againat least, not without Emily knowing.
