A Close Friend of Mine Spent Years Searching for a Husband, but When She Finally Found One, Her Mother-in-Law Became the Next Big Challenge

My friend Susan owned a beauty salon and was a generous, intelligent woman. She often showered her friends with gifts and never charged us a penny for her salon services. Wanting to return the favour, I helped her look after her daughters from her first marriage. Susan had left her first husband because of his overwhelming greed, which extended even to neglecting the basic needs of their daughters. Later on, jealousy tore apart her second marriage, and her third husband proved unfaithful, which led to yet another divorce. Quick divorces, however, allowed her to keep ownership of her flat without having to split it with anyone.

Despite her busy schedule and attempts to find me a partner, it was always a bit of a challenge. But one day, she met a man called Jake while taking a cabhe was the driver. He was a good-looking chap with green eyes, and although shed once worried about appearances, they got on splendidly. A week later, Jake introduced her to his mother, whom he affectionately called Mum Veronica. At first, she seemed pleasant enough, but soon her overbearing attentiveness grew rather overwhelming.

Even though Jake was 34, his mother maintained constant contact, frequently phoning and visiting him, and went so far as to interfere unnecessarily with their relationship. On one occasion, she asked Susan outright if they kissed before leaving for work, insisting that it was absolutely essential for a happy family. She was always getting involved, offering unsolicited advice whenever she sensed a minor issue, making their living situation quite uncomfortable. Sometimes, she arrived home late from work just to prepare dinner, using it as a pretext to stay with them. Jake, pleased to have both his mother and his partner cooking and fussing over him, never strayed from his mothers side.

In the end, Susan chose to end the relationship, realising she could not live in the shadow of such an overbearing mother-in-law. Through her experience, Susan learned that maintaining healthy boundaries is vitalnot just for happiness in relationships, but for genuine independence and self-respect.
